Why Salt Is More Than a Seasoning
We often think of salt as something we add to food at the very end a pinch here, a little more there. But to me, salt has always been more than a seasoning.
Salt is one of the oldest ingredients known to us. It has shaped cuisines, cultures, trade, and even civilizations. Yet despite its history and importance, we rarely stop to think about what makes one salt different from another.
As I began exploring salt more deeply, I realised that salt can influence an entire eating experience. Its origin, mineral composition, crystal size, texture, and how it interacts with food can all make a difference. A delicate finishing salt can add texture and brightness, while a deeper mineral rich salt can bring a completely different character to a dish.
That is what fascinated me about salt and ultimately inspired SALTL.
We wanted to look at salt differently. Not simply as an ingredient that makes food salty, but as something that can enhance flavour, texture and the way we experience food.
There is something beautiful about an ingredient so simple, yet so capable of changing a dish with just a pinch.
For us, SALTL is about appreciating that simplicity.
Because sometimes, the smallest details make the biggest difference.
