The Story Behind SALTL: How a Simple Pinch Became Something More
I don't remember the exact moment SALTL began. There wasn't a grand business plan, a perfectly written strategy, or one sudden moment when I decided I was going to start a brand. It was much quieter than that. It began with a simple question that somehow stayed with me: why is salt always treated like salt?
Salt is one of the oldest and most essential ingredients in the world. It has been part of kitchens and dining tables for thousands of years. We use it almost every day, often without thinking twice about it. We notice when there is too much, when there isn't enough, but rarely when it is simply doing exactly what it is supposed to do. Somehow, something so important had become almost invisible. And for some reason, that bothered me.
So I started experimenting. I began playing around with different salts, spices, herbs, chillies, citrus and textures. A little chilli here, some lime there, garlic, rosemary, black pepper and combinations that probably should never have existed in the first place. Some experiments were terrible. Some were surprisingly good. And every once in a while, there was one that made me stop and think, wait...this actually changes everything. That was when the idea behind SALTL started taking shape. Maybe salt didn't have to be something we simply added to food. Maybe it could become part of the experience. Maybe a flavoured salt could do more than add saltiness. Maybe it could bring heat, acidity, aroma, texture or an entirely different character to something as simple as a meal.
The experiments slowly became flavours. The flavours needed names. The names needed labels. The labels needed jars. And somewhere along the way, something that had started as curiosity began to look like a real brand. I called it SALTL. The name felt right because it was simple, direct and familiar, but slightly different. And that was exactly what I wanted SALTL to be something familiar enough to understand, but different enough to make you curious.
I've always believed that good food doesn't have to be complicated. You don't need a professional kitchen or a long list of ingredients to make something memorable. Sometimes, the smallest detail can make the biggest difference. A little Chilli Lime on fresh fruit. Garlic on warm bread. Rosemary over roasted vegetables. Black Pepper over a perfectly cooked steak. A finishing salt over something straight off the grill. Or a little cocktail salt around the rim of a glass before the evening begins. None of these things require complicated recipes. They simply require a different way of looking at an ingredient we have always taken for granted.
The more I experimented, the more I realised just how versatile salt could be. The right combination of salt and flavour can complement food rather than overpower it. It can bring out sweetness, sharpen acidity, add heat, introduce aroma or create another layer of texture. That is what makes flavoured salt so interesting to me. It isn't necessarily about adding more. It's about adding the right thing. That became part of the philosophy behind SALTL's seasoning salts and cocktail salts creating flavours with their own character while keeping them simple enough to become part of everyday life.
Of course, building a brand is rarely as simple as the finished product makes it look. When you see a SALTL jar today, you don't see all the versions that came before it. You don't see the flavours that didn't work, the recipes that needed to be changed, the packaging that had to be redesigned or the labels that looked perfect on a screen but somehow didn't feel right on the actual jar. You don't see the calculations, sourcing, testing, logistics or the late nights spent wondering whether anyone would actually want what I was creating. There were plenty of moments when building SALTL felt less like building a business and more like trying to convince myself that this little idea deserved to exist. Then someone would taste it and ask, "Where did you get this?" And suddenly, all those doubts felt a little smaller.
I still think there is something special about the first order of anything you create yourself. Technically, it is just an order a name on a screen, a jar that needs to be packed and an address that needs to be written. But when you've developed the flavour, chosen the packaging, worked on the label, packed the box yourself and then watched it leave your hands, it becomes something much bigger. Somewhere, someone you've never met is about to open something that started as an idea in your head. That feeling is difficult to explain, and it remains one of my favourite parts of building SALTL.
Today, I don't think of SALTL as simply a flavoured salt brand. For me, it is about curiosity. It is about looking at something ordinary and asking whether it could be better. It is about discovering new flavours without making food unnecessarily complicated. It is about experimentation, craftsmanship and finding that balance where a small pinch can change an entire experience. And perhaps most importantly, SALTL is about perspective. Because sometimes, you don't need to completely reinvent something. You just need to look at it differently.
Salt has always been there. We simply decided to look at it again.
So, if you ever find yourself holding a jar of SALTL, I hope you see more than just salt. I hope you see the experiments, the failed batches, the late nights, the little moments of excitement and all the decisions that went into making something so simple feel a little different. And I hope you remember the question that started it all:
What if salt could be something more?
That's the story behind SALTL.
A story that started with a pinch of curiosity.
And honestly, I think we're only getting started.
